Juneteenth? What's that? Are you sure you've spelled it correctly? Oh, you have more questions. Well, I found many answers regarding Juneteenth at http://www.juneteenth.com. Let me break it down for you in case you don't know.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863. However, that had little effect on Texans, and it wasn't until June 19, 1865 that the news of the end of slavery and the end of the war reached Galveston, Texas. On the anniversary (June 19, 1866) of receiving the news of the end of slavery, the celebrations began and soon became known as Juneteenth celebrations.
Juneteenth is a day to reflect on our experiences as a people. A day to listen, learn, refresh our drive to achieve and to honor and respect the achievements of those who have paved the way for us.
While the celebration of Juneteenth has now gone National, there is no standardized form of celebrating Juneteenth and now the celebrations include all races, ethnicity and nationalities.
Syracuse, New York celebrates with parades, ethnic dancers, ethnic bands, songs, food, and fun.
